We live and interact with microorganisms on a daily basis in the food we eat, the surfaces we touch, even the air we breathe. Much research is done to learn more about these organisms and how they can help and harm us. Our body has many natural defenses in place to protect against the potential harmful effects some of these organisms present.
The biological safety program provides oversight and coordination for the safe use of human and animal pathogens, biological toxins, human blood and recombinant DNA on campus. This involves monitoring laboratory safety practices, providing training and information, picking up biohazardous waste for safe disposal and advising researchers about pertinent regulatory guidelines and required permits.
The EH&S Office has staff on the Biohazards Committee and Institutional Biosafety/Recombinant DNA Committee and is involved in ensuring pathogenic organisms are handled in a controlled environment by competent personnel. Our office is always available to assist you with questions or concerns you may have relating to biosafety.
