| Many of the chemicals used every day at Utah State University have hazardous properties. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that these chemicals be properly disposed of when they have served their purposes. The chemical categories that are deemed by USU and EPA to be hazardous are: 1- Flammable Flash point <60*C 2- Corrosive pH < 2 or > 12.4 3- Reactive Raises in Temperature if exposed to air or water 4- Toxic No specific parameters 5- Oxidizer No specific parameters 6- Listed See 40 CFR 261 7- Concerned Any chemical the generator is concerned about EPA has specified how hazardous waste must be collected, stored and disposed. At USU we have expanded upon these rules to fit an academic institution. There are primarily three rules: 1- Keep a lid on it. 2- Accurately label it. 3- Dispose of it through the EH&S Office every 2-4 weeks Please remember that EPA has mandated that we reuse or recycle whenever possible. |
